New Delhi: Nabarangpur in Odisha is among three locations identified by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited for developing commercial nuclear power plants.
The other sites are Basai in Madhya Pradesh and Banka in Bihar.
The plan is part of the NTPC’s broader roadmap to build up to 30 GW of nuclear capacity across 14 states by 2047.
India’s largest state-owned power generation company has submitted detailed feasibility reports for each site to the Atomic Energy Commission for approval.
If approved, the three identified locations are expected to have 2-4 GW of nuclear capacity each.
NTPC is also exploring technology collaborations with global players like Holtec International and Westinghouse of the US, Rosatom of Russia and EDF of France for pressurised water reactor projects to be deployed at these locations, The Times of India reported citing an official aware of the development.
NTPC, with an installed power generation capacity of 89 GW, including thermal, hydro and renewable energy, is targeting 149 GW by 2032 and 244 GW by 2037.
The NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Ltd has been set up as its wholly-owned subsidiary to foray into nuclear power. Its first nuclear project in Mahi Banswara (Rajasthan), comprising four 700 MW units is being developed through Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd, a joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
