Bhubaneswar: After assuming office, the new twin cities Police Commissioner, Satyajit Mohanty, on Friday said winning the trust of the people was key to maintaining law and order in the society.

“Winning the trust of the people is vital for the police for its smooth functioning. The police will have to work in such a manner that the people will repose their faith and trust and come forward to cooperate,” he told mediapersons.

The senior Odisha cadre IPS officer of 1988 batch and Additional Director General (ADG) took charge as the sixth Police Commissioner from his predecessor and 1990 batch IPS officer YB Khurania.

Khurania, who had taken charge from Dr RP Sharma (currently the Director General of Police) on January 27, 2016, is now posted as ADG (Provisioning).

Mohanty also said there a lot of challenges for the Commissionerate Police. “To effectively meet these challenges, more manpower is required. I will try my best to take up this issue with the state government,” he pointed out.

After arriving at the Commissionerate Police Headquarters here, the senior IPS officer was given the Guard of Honour. Later, he was introduced to the senior police officers of the twin cities.

Mohanty had started his career as Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jeypore in 1990 and later served in the capacity of ASP, Puri and SP of Koraput, Rourkela, Cuttack and Balasore. He had also served as SP, Vigilance, and Additional Transport Commissioner.

After his promotion to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he was posted as DIGP, Northern Range, Sambalpur, Central Range, Cuttack and Western Range, Rourkela. On promotion to the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP), he was posted as IGP, Western Range, Rourkela, Fire Service & Home Guards and IGP (Finance), and Director, State Police Academy, Bhubaneswar.

On his subsequent promotion to the rank of ADG, he had worked as the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Odisha Police Housing & Welfare Corporation.

Mohanty has authored books like ‘Police in India: Role Responsibility & Accountability’, ‘Human Behavior and Police Ethics’ and ‘Human Rights’ & ‘Criminology’. His latest book, ‘Community Policing as a Public Policy’ was recently published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, United Kingdom.

He is the guest resource person of National Police Academy, Hyderabad, Gopabandhu Academy of Administration, Bhubaneswar, and Odisha Judicial Academy, Cuttack, National Law University, Cuttack, National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

He has been nominated to National Police Mission as a executive committee member.

During his service career, Mohanty has received several commendations and rewards. He was felicitated with the Police Medal for meritorious service in 2004 and the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service in 2012.
