Union Cabinet Approves Ordinance On Triple Talaq
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the Triple Talaq ordinance making the practice of instant divorce a punishable offence.
Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, said the practice continued “unabated” despite the Supreme Court annulling it last year.
The Cabinet approval takes the Triple Talaq bill a step closer to becoming a law even as it remains pending in the Rajya Sabha.
The Bill to criminalise Triple Talaq was passed by the Lok Sabha in the winter session of the Parliament but got stuck in the Rajya Sabha as the Government brought the official amendments to the bill on the last day of the monsoon session.
According to the reworked version of the Triple Talaq Bill, an offence will be cognisable only when a first investigation report (FIR) is filed by a victim wife or her close relatives, related to her by blood or marriage.
