Odisha Crime Branch Arrests Rs 18.5 Lakh Medical Seat Scam Mastermind From West Bengal
Bhubaneswar: After sustained efforts over the last three years, the Crime Branch of Odisha Police arrested the mastermind behind a cheating case involving Rs 18.5 lakh in the form of providing admission to a student in a medical college.
The accused, identified as Shubhasish Pati, was absconding for the last three years. He was finally apprehended from Bishnupur area of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal, a press release said on Wednesday.
It said one Binod Kumar of Himachal Pradesh had reported regarding cheating of Rs 18.5 lakh during 2015-16 by three persons on the pretext of getting a seat in the management quota for his son in a reputed medical collage at Bangalore or Bhubaneswar.
When they failed to keep their promise, the accused issued a cheque to the complainant which later bounced.
In this connection a case was registered in December, 2019 and two persons, Raghunath Behera and Somyakanta Mahanty, were arrested. However, main accused Shubhasish Pati was absconding for the last 3 years.
Based on reliable information, a raid was conducted today by a Crime Branch team in Bishnupur area and Pati was arrested . He would be brought to Odisha soon. His complicity in other crimes in Odisha is being verified.
