Mass Shooting At Prague University; At Least 10 Killed, Dozens Wounded

New Delhi: For a change, there was a mass shooting at an educational institution in Europe, and not in the US.

A shooter went on a rampage at Charles University in Czech Republic capital Prague on Thursday evening, killing at least 10 people and leaving dozens wounded, reported CNN.

Czech Police said that the person who opened fire had been eliminated, but was yet to provide details of the number of dead and wounded.

“The shooter has been eliminated!!! The entire building is currently being evacuated and there are several dead and dozens of injured. Based on initial information, we can confirm there are dead and injured people at the site,” police said on social media.

Videos on social media showed chaos outside the university complex with people running helter skelter amid gunshots. There were photographs in which some people are seen taking shelter on a ledge to escape from the shooting.

The shooting reportedly took place at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts, near Prague’s Old Town which is a major tourist spot.

“We urge citizens not to stay in the immediate vicinity and not to leave the house. Police intervention is still ongoing,” Czech Police appealed.

Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan also confirmed that the shooter was dead, but there was no confirmation of any other gunman being involved in the incident.

Assuring that there was no further imminent danger, the minister asked people to cooperate with the authorities.

Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda said the Philosophy department of Charles University, located at the square, has been evacuated and the square sealed off.
