Bhubaneswar: Fifty-four skilled chess players (52 men and 2 women) from 15 states and Union territories are vying for glory in the National Chess Championship for the Visually Impaired which got underway here on Wednesday.

The tournament is being hosted by SAI International Residential School, in collaboration with All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB).

The highly competitive nine-round championship format will conclude on April 6.

B K Swain, Secretary of Odisha government’s Sports & Youth Services department, was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony.

“This initiative for visually impaired players is an honour to Odisha’s commitment to making sports accessible to all. We believe that such efforts will not only encourage participation but also nurture talent, proving that determination knows no boundaries. The government remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote equal opportunities in sports,” said Swain.

SAI International Education Group chairperson Dr Silpi Sahoo, who was the chief guest, said the event reaffirms the group’s commitment to fostering an environment where everyone gets the opportunity to excel.

“To the players — each of you is an inspiration. Your dedication, strategic thinking, and passion for the game redefine the meaning of resilience. Whether you win or lose today, remember that every move you make on the board is a move toward a brighter, more empowered future,” said Sahoo.

Asian Para Games gold-medallist Soundarya Pradhan delivered an energizing speech to encourage the participants.

Sanyasi Behera, the first visually impaired OAS officer, AICFB vice-president Kishan Gangolli and treasurer Swapnil Shah were present.

The event began with a melodious performance by the SAIoneers Choir, followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp.
