Bhubaneswar: Frustrated over undue delay, residents of Palasuni area of Bhubaneswar inaugurated a solid waste treatment plant completed around eight months ago at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
The locals made the symbolic move to open the treatment plant, developed by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), to address environmental pollution especially foul smell.
They formally declared the solid waste management unit functional on Sunday taking the call of a local social outfit ‘Aliagada Hatao O Sainik School Banchao Abhiyan’.
The angry locals alleged that inaction and apathetic attitude of the local authorities had triggered frustration among the residents. Repeated requests made to the authorities concerned for making the plant operational went unheeded, they claimed.
Finally, the drastic step was taken by the irate public as the project completed before last 8 months, fell to be commissioned by the BMC. As a result, the local suffocated due to the foul odour dispersed from the piles of garbage at the plant site.
The mega plant has a capacity to process 150 metric tonnes of garbage per month.
Response from the BMC authorities is yet to come, on the today’s move of the locals.
They also warned the BMC authorities protest would be intensified if garbage from Gadakana dumping yard is not shifted to the new facility soon.
