New Delhi: Is there any link between a missing US nuclear device from Mt Nanda Devi and the recent ‘natural’ calamities in the Himalayan region?
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who has a penchant for raking up controversy, slammed the Congress in an X post on Monday, accusing the party’s leaders, including Rahul Gandhi of harming India’s environment and the interest of farmers by bowing to foreign powers.
Dubey attached a copy of a 1978 letter from members of the US Congress addressed to the then US president. The letter expressed concern about the CIA’s secret operation and the potential radioactive leak from the lost plutonium-powered device in the Himalayas.
The US Congressmen had urged their government to investigate the matter and take responsibility if the claims were true.
This is in connection to a 1965 CIA operation, which allegedly involved placing nuclear-powered surveillance equipment on the Nanda Devi peak to monitor Chinese activities. One such device reportedly went missing after being buried by an avalanche, raising concerns that radioactive material may have leaked from it.
In his post, Dubey asked whether the Kedarnath disaster, the Teesta River flooding, melting glaciers in Gangotri and Yamunotri, and even the decreasing water level of the Ganga River could be linked to this incident.
The MP also alleged that the Nehru-Gandhi family, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, had surrendered to foreign interests, harming India’s environment and its farmers.
“The Nehru-Gandhi family, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress have caused severe harm to India’s faith and farmers by bowing before the US. Did the Kedarnath disaster happen due to US nuclear material that disappeared from the the Nanda Devi peak in the 1960s? Is it responsible for the flooding of the Teesta River? Is Nehru Ji’s surrender before the US responsible for the melting glaciers of Gangotri-Yamunotri and the continuous decrease in the Ganga’s water level that has caused severe harm to farmers,” the MP has asked in his post.
In 1965, Indian and American intelligence agencies reportedly carried out a joint mission to set up a nuclear-powered monitoring station near the Nanda Devi summit. A device went missing after an avalanche and has not been traced till now.
