Berhampur: A fresh incident of ragging has come to light at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur after some second-year MBBS students accused seven seniors of harassment.
As per the complaints made by victims, the seniors forced juniors to stand for hours under the pretext of a general body meeting. When objections were made, the seniors forced them to squat in awkward positions and kneel down as punishment.
It was alleged that the seniors subjected them to ragging on August 18 and later asked them to attend another so-called meeting on August 19. When the juniors ignored their instruction, the seniors allegedly entered their hostel and verbally abused them.
The seniors also created disturbances by dancing in an inebriated state while playing loud music.
The matter came to light after the aggrieved students lodged a complaint with the National Medical Commission (NMC), which sent a letter to the Dean of the college seeking a report on the allegations.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the college’s anti-ragging cell is slated to be held to examine the allegations and take appropriate action.
It may be noted that, MKCG MCH has been in the limelight for ragging incidents in the past. A March 2024 report by the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE) revealed the institution topped the list of 12 medical colleges with the highest number of complaints. At least 25 cases were reported to the UGC’s National Anti-Ragging Helpline between 2022 and 2024.
