Keonjhar: An elephant fatally crushed an elderly man in Odisha’s Keonjhar district.
According to Dhamdhere Dhanraj Hanumant, divisional forest officer (DFO), Keonjhar, the tragedy unfolded on Saturday night when a herd of elephants entered Barahaposi village in the Champua forest range. One of the elephants attacked the man and trampled him to death.
The victim was identified as Anadi Mahanta, Hanumant informed on Sunday.
Anadi, aged in the 70s, was rushed to Keonjhar hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
“As per norms, we will provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased. While Rs 1 lakh will be provided immediately to perform the last rites, the remaining amount will be provided later,” the DFO said.
People in Champua area expressed their resentment as three people have lost their lives due to elephant attacks in a period of one month.
