Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced plans to construct a new helipad near Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district, aiming to enhance connectivity to this ecologically sensitive and biodiverse region while boosting eco-tourism.
Replying to a query in the Odisha Assembly, Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena stated that Mayurbhanj administration has been asked to identify suitable land for the helipad. The initiative follows a proposal from Bangiriposhi MLA Sanjali Murmu.
In addition to the helipad, the state has partnered with Pawan Hans Limited, a helicopter operator under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, to launch heli-taxi services in Bhubaneswar-Gopalpur and Bhubaneswar-Similipal routes, he added.
The minister noted that the proposed helipad and heli taxi services will strengthen air connectivity to remote regions and promote eco-tourism, while also facilitating quicker movement for officials and emergency response teams..
Later speaking to the media, Jena mentioned about the Joy Ride Scheme. A Pawan Hans helicopter had arrived at the Rangeilunda airstrip in Berhampur last month during which the minister had confirmed that the service will be launched soon with affordable ticket pricing at the Chilika lake and the Maa Taratarini shrine in Ganjam district, allowing visitors a chance to experience Odisha’s natural and cultural landmarks from the sky.
“Similar services will also begin in Bhubaneswar, Puri, Konark, and Similipal known for its tiger reserve and rich wildlife while encouraging sustainable tourism,” he told reporters.
The announcements align with broader efforts to expand aviation infrastructure in Odisha.
