Kathmandu: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by Balendra Shah, is turning out to be the the early frontrunner in the parliamentary elections conducted in Nepal. The party is leading in at least 90 seats. However, the counting of votes is going on.
The Nepali Congress and KP Sharma Oli’s UML are leading on eight seats each. The Nepali Communist Party is leading on seven seats.
The vote was conducted months after the 2025 uprising. The protests were led by the youths over corruption, unemployment and social media curbs. Following the protests which saw several casualties, the previous government was forced to step down. This led to an interim administration.
More than 3,400 candidates contested 165 directly elected seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. The voter turnout reached 59 per cent.
