Bhubaneswar: Two died and five others suffered critical injuries when the SUV in which they were traveling collided head-on with a truck at Chandaka, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, late on Thursday.
According to sources, the accident took place around 2.30 pm near Bhola Chhak when seven people, all believed to be engineering students, were travelling in the SUV on Chandaka-Bhola stretch, and the vehicle slammed into an oncoming truck, resulting in a devastating impact. The front portion of the SUV was mangled under the impact of the collision, trapping passengers inside the wreckage.
Locals and passers-by alerted police, who along with Fire services personnel rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation. The trapped individuals were pulled out from the badly damaged vehicle, using gas cutters.
While two among them were declared dead at the scene, the five injured were rushed to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where they are undergoing treatment for serious injuries.
Sources indicated the students may have been returning from a gathering or party. Their identity is yet to be ascertained.
