Berhampur: Confirming death by hanging, the post-mortem report in the alleged suicide of BCA student of a private engineering college in Odisha’s Ganjam district concluded that she was not pregnant.
According to Dr Sudeepa Das, Head of the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Department of MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Brahmapur, the autopsy findings do not support allegations about the 20-year-old student being pregnant.
The post-mortem examination found no evidence of murder and established that the student died after hanging herself, she said.
Notably, the second year BCA student was found hanging from the ceiling of her hostel room in Golanthara area near Brahmapur on Saturday. Following a complaint lodged by her maternal uncle, Golanthara Police registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with abetment of suicide.
Based on the complaint, police also arrested 24-year-old Biswajit Jena, the nephew of Odisha Steel & Mines and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, in connection with the case.
Biswajit, who was reportedly the deceased student’s boyfriend and a final year BCA student at the same college, was taken into custody on Sunday.
The complainant alleged that the victim was in a relationship with Biswajit and that mental pressure and harassment by the accused drove her to take the extreme step.
Brahmapur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M had earlier said that investigators collected digital and forensic evidence from the hostel room. Electronic devices belonging to both the deceased and the accused have been seized and sent for scientific examination.
Police have questioned the victim’s friends and acquaintances to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
“The probe is in its preliminary stage. We are verifying the accusations made by the family members and collecting digital evidence. We will be able to provide more details as the investigation progresses,” a senior police officer said.
