Bhubaneswar: Drinking up to five cups of plain black coffee a day is safe for most adults and may even help lower the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes and heart failure, according to a new scientific statement released by the American Heart Association (AHA). The findings were published in the journal Circulation, reported HT.
The AHA said consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day—roughly equivalent to five 8-ounce cups of coffee—is generally considered safe for healthy adults. Researchers found that moderate coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of several cardiovascular and metabolic conditions, although individual responses to caffeine can vary depending on genetics, age, metabolism and existing health conditions.
The scientific statement reviewed evidence from numerous studies examining the health effects of coffee and caffeine. Besides caffeine, coffee contains naturally occurring compounds such as polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may contribute to its potential health benefits.
However, experts cautioned that the health benefits are most evident with plain black coffee. Adding sugar, cream or flavoured syrups may reduce those benefits by increasing calorie and saturated fat intake.
The AHA also advised against relying on energy drinks as a source of caffeine. These beverages often contain much higher caffeine levels and other stimulants that may increase the risk of high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms and other cardiovascular problems.
While moderate coffee consumption appears safe for most adults, the association stressed that there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation. People who are pregnant, have certain medical conditions or are particularly sensitive to caffeine should consult their healthcare provider about appropriate intake.
