Hyderabad: Amid escalating tensions over the Cauvery water dispute, Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ has reportedly faced disruptions in Karnataka.
According to an NDTV report, multiple theatres have suspended screenings of the film over law and order concerns after farmers and pro-Kannada organisations staged protests against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Posters, banners and cut-outs of Vijay were also removed from several theatre premises.
Reports state that screenings of ‘Jana Nayagan’ at Bengaluru’s Urvashi Theatre were halted following a police advisory.
The theatre reportedly took down the film’s promotional material and replaced its scheduled shows with the Kannada film ‘Karavali’.
Police personnel were deployed outside the theatre as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.
In Mandya, pro-Kannada activists reportedly removed promotional banners of the film from public places as protests over the water-sharing dispute intensified.
Released on July 23, ‘Jana Nayagan’ reportedly opened in around 125 to 150 theatres across Karnataka, including more than 75 single-screen cinemas and nearly 50 multiplexes.
However, the ongoing disruptions are expected to impact the film’s box office run in the state.
Helmed by H. Vinoth and produced by Venkat K. Narayana under the KVN Productions banner, ‘Jana Nayagan’ is a Tamil political action entertainer starring Vijay, Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju in lead roles.
The film also features Nassar, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain and Priyamani in pivotal roles. It is the official Tamil remake of the 2023 Telugu blockbuster Bhagavanth Kesari.
