Bengaluru: The Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Saturday moved the apex court, seeking a direction to Karnataka to immediately release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. It urged the Supreme Court to issue directions for Karnataka to comply with Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) norms.
The Tamil Nadu government is also in the process of filing an appeal before the Supreme Court, reported HT.
The application has been filed by DMK Farmers Wing secretary and former MP AKS Vijayan. There are concerns prevailing over a water crisis in the state during the agricultural season in the Cauvery Delta.
Earlier, Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) had asked Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day at Biligundlu for 15 days. Karnataka had challenged the order before the CWMA. Its appeal was dismissed.
The application, according to HT, pointed out that Tamil Nadu had informed the CWRC that Karnataka was not releasing water in accordance with the top court’s earlier decision as well as a tribunal directing it to maintain a monthly stipulated flow during the months of June to January totalling to 167.25 thousand million cubic feet.
However, Karnataka opposed the demand.
