Digapahandi: A sub-jail warder was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside his official residence at Digapahandi in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Shivanand Swain, who was posted at the Digapahandi Sub-Jail.
According to sources, Swain had been transferred from Puri and had assumed his duties at Digapahandi Sub-Jail just 15 days ago. He was found hanging by a rope in his official quarters, where he was residing alone.
Upon receiving information, Pattapur Police arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and secured the area. Senior officials, including DIG (Prisons) Subhakanta Mishra, were informed of the incident to oversee the formal procedures. Arrangements were subsequently made to transport the deceased’s body to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for postmortem to establish the exact cause and timing of death.
Colleagues noted that Swain had been punctual and diligent in his duties since joining the post, and no immediate signs of distress had been observed.
Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the act was driven by work-related stress, personal issues, or family disputes, as no suicide note was immediately recovered from the spot.
