New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been served notice over a breach of privilege complaint filed by BJP MPs.
The Congress MP has been asked to submit his reply by August 28 over remarks made against Union Home minister Amit Shah during a debate on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.
The notice, issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, comes after several complaints alleged that Rahul used ‘unparliamentary’ language and levelled serious allegations against Shah without giving advance notice required under Rule 353 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha.
BJP MP and former Union minister Anurag Thakur, who submitted the breach of privilege notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on July 30, alleged that the Congress leader made objectionable remarks against the Home minister during the debate on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.
Dr Sanjay Jaiswal, another BJP MP, wrote on July 29 urging the Speaker to take cognisance of Rahul’s alleged use of unparliamentary expressions during the same debate.
Jaiswal urged the Speaker to initiate appropriate action under the Rules of Procedure.
If Rahul’s explanation is found satisfactory, the matter may be closed. If not, it is likely to be referred to the Committee of Privileges, which is headed by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad.
