Bhubaneswar: A woman travelling on the Alappuzha-Dhanbad Express unexpectedly gave birth to a baby girl inside a coach as the train neared Ambodala railway station in Rayagada district.
Railway officials said the pregnant passenger, identified as Riva Devi from Bihar, went into sudden labour while travelling toward Ranchi on Saturday evening.
Co-passengers alerted railway authorities and arrangements were made for medical assistance at Ambodala railway station.
She delivered her baby right as the train arrived at the railway station. RPF personnel and railway staff rushed in to help. They arranged a stretcher and called a 108 ambulance.
Meanwhile, frontline female healthcare workers attended to the woman and her newborn on the spot. The two were safely shifted to the Ambodala Government Hospital, where doctors confirmed they are healthy and stable.
The train was detained for around 50 minutes at Ambodala railway station, before resuming its journey at 6.57 pm, railway officials said.
