Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable achievement, Paradip Port in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district has been officially designated as a “Mega Port” by the Centre.
With this, Paradip Port has become the only port on India’s East Coast to receive the recognition accorded under the Indian Ports Act, 2025.
Official sources said the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has issued a notification designating Paradip, along with Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) and Mundra Port, as “Mega Ports” after evaluating them against prescribed performance benchmarks. The Minstry also shared the information in a post on X.

Officials said the designation has further strengthened Paradip Port’s position as a key maritime gateway on the eastern seaboard and is expected to support expansion of maritime infrastructure, trade and connectivity.
The recognition has been welcomed by Paradip Port officials, port-user agencies and local residents, with celebrations reported in the port town following the Centre’s announcement.
It may be noted that Paradip Port serves as a critical logistics hub for eastern and central India as it handles large volumes of coal, iron ore, fertilizers and crude oil.
