New Delhi: A video showing Indian diplomat R Srinivas’ reaction to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is doing the rounds on social media.
The reaction was captured as Sharif spoke about the four-day military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May 2025. The confrontation followed India’s launch of Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack.
During his address, Sharif presented Pakistan’s account of the events and made several claims concerning India, Jammu and Kashmir and the Indus Waters Treaty. He also described Pakistan’s military response during the confrontation as a “victory”, claiming that Pakistan’s armed forces had “silenced the enemy” and “taught it a lesson”.
As Sharif made these remarks, Srinivas was seen on camera appearing to smirk and shake his head. The footage subsequently gained widespread attention on social media.
Sharif also said Pakistan had exercised its “inherent right of self-defence” under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter during the period of heightened tensions. He praised Pakistan’s armed forces for their response and credited US President Donald Trump with helping prevent the situation from escalating further.
According to Sharif, Trump intervened when India and Pakistan had reached a critical point. India, however, has repeatedly maintained that the ceasefire between the two countries was reached through direct communication between India and Pakistan, with no third-party involvement.
India subsequently criticised Sharif’s UNGA address, accusing Pakistan of terrorism, deceit and duplicity and warning that support for cross-border terrorism would have consequences.
Exercising India’s right of reply at the UN, First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Petal Gahlot, rejected Pakistan’s remarks concerning India and Jammu and Kashmir. She also criticised Pakistan over its record on terrorism, democratic rights and the treatment of minorities.
