New Delhi: It seems that India is preparing to strike Pakistan beyond just the diplomatic measures. Almost a fortnight after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran valley, an attack seems imminent.
Amid the escalating tensions between the south Asian neighbours, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern on Monday, and urged both nations to exercise “maximum restraint” to avoid further deterioration of regional stability, PTI reported.
Guterres said that those responsible for the Pahalgam attack should be brought to justice “through credible and lawful means”.
“Targeting civilians is unacceptable, and those responsible must be brought to justice through credible, lawful means. It is also essential, especially at this critical hour, to avoid a military confrontation that could easily spin out of control. Now is the time for maximum restraint and stepping back from the brink,” the UN chief said.
Guterres’ remarks come after the UN Security Council (UNSC) held closed-door consultations on the India-Pakistan situation in the wake of the Pahalgam massacre.
Anticipating military action by India and rattled by several punitive measures, Pakistan had sought an emergency meeting on the issue.
India cited cross-border linkages to the horrific attack on April 22, and promised severe punishment for the culprits and their handlers.
The suspension of Indus Waters Treaty, among critical retaliatory actions taken by India, has been dubbed as an “act of war” by Pakistan, which announced reciprocal measures, including holding the Simla Agreement in abeyance.
