Aadhaar Card Of Couple Mandatory For Marriage In This Odisha District

Berhampur: As part of its plan to make Ganjam district free of child marriage, the administration has made submission of Aadhaar card of bride and groom mandatory for the marriage.

District Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange said the administration wants to verify the age bride and groom from their Aadhaar cards as part of the drive against child marriage. As per law, the marriageable age for a bride is 18 years and a groom is 21 years.

Stating that the child marriage affects the health and the families of the couple, he said task force would be formed in municipalities and notified area councils (NAC) to stop and monitor the child marriages.

Earlier, the district administration had claimed that 1032 villages and 140 wards of the urban areas have already been declared child marriage-free.
