Bhubaneswar: One of the accused in the case pertaining to the two women from Delhi, who were allegedly manhandled in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Sunday, reportedly attempted to end his life by consuming oleander fruit when a police team raided his house last night.
Anil Jena (30), who allegedly took the extreme step, was rescued and admitted to district headquarters hospital in Jajpur for treatment. Efforts are on to nab the other accused identified as Nitesh Jena (20), who is absconding, Jajpur SP Yash Pratap Shrimal told the media.
The incident took place on Sunday night when the two women were returning home at Tarangasagarpur village after visiting Maa Biraja Temple. One of the women, a local, had come home for her father’s first death anniversary accompanied by a female friend. They got down at Patanasahi Chhak and she called her brother to come pick them up as they felt unsafe to walk home alone since it was already 9.30 pm.
The assailants reportedly confronted the women at a local playground. They allegedly passed lewd comments, misbehaved with them, touched them inappropriately and pulled their T-shirts. “They also beat up the brothers of the local woman when they protested. The miscreants could have been under the influence of alcohol,” the Delhi woman told reporters here.
The accused fled, anticipating trouble, when the two women raised an alarm drawing the attention of the locals, who soon reached the spot.
She further alleged that though they filed a complaint at the police station on Sunday night by naming the accused persons, no action was taken till Monday evening.
