Active Tally Breaches 5K As Odisha Reports Over 1000 New COVID Cases For 2nd Day

Bhubaneswar: The active COVID tally in Odisha surged past 5,000 on Saturday with 1,065 fresh cases, including 122 in the 0-18 years age group, being detected in the last 24 hours.

It is for the second day that the state has reported over 1000 cases, the highest single-day tally in five months. The state had on February 13 registered 1,148 cases.

According to the I & PR department, 624 positives are from quarantine and 441 local transmission cases. The highest of 361 cases have been reported from Khurda followed by 135 from Cuttack and 111 from Sundargarh.

With these cases being detected from 19,542 samples, the test positivity rate stood at 5.44 per cent. Odisha now has 5,376 active cases.

Notably, the single-day count has more than doubled since 470 cases on July 8 and there has been a 10-fold increase in cases in the last 20 days. Odisha is now among the top eight states fuelling the COVID fourth wave in the country.

According to senior health officials, the surge is expected to continue till the first week of August before reaching the plateau.
