New Delhi: The captain of an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi may have tested positive for psychoactive substances in a post-flight dope test, according to a report by The Times of India, which cited multiple sources.

The test was reportedly conducted after flight AI2379 arrived in Delhi following a turbulence-related incident on August 4. However, Air India said it had not received the test results and, therefore, could not comment on the reported finding.

“We are aware that a post-flight screening test was conducted on the pilots in accordance with applicable protocols. However, the results of the test have not been shared with Air India, and we are therefore not in a position to comment on any findings,” an airline spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Air India also said its crew members undergo routine drug screening in accordance with civil aviation regulations. It maintained that such testing is carried out independently of specific flights or operational incidents.

“Air India undertakes regular drug testing of crew members in compliance with civil aviation regulations, independent of any specific flight or operational incident. We will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities as required,” the airline said.

Sudden Altitude Loss

The reported test result has emerged while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Airbus A320, carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members, was flying from Phuket to Delhi when it encountered turbulence for approximately four to five minutes. During the incident, the aircraft suddenly lost nearly 300 feet in altitude before continuing its journey and landing safely in Delhi.

A senior DGCA official earlier said the pilot had reported serious injuries to one cabin crew member, injuries to another crew member and minor injuries to some passengers. Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said certain crew members had suffered spinal and neck injuries and had been advised by doctors to take rest.

“The plane had to travel for one more hour and even through that hour, the crew members provided all the assistance required. It was very brave. I want to thank them for the bravery they have shown,” Naidu said, according to PTI.

At least 17 people — 13 passengers and four cabin crew members — were taken to hospital after the incident. Air India said all 13 hospitalised passengers had been discharged by 3.30 pm on August 5.
