Amritsar: Three bike-borne men shot dead a Shiromani Akali Dal councillor here on Sunday.
The councillor, identified as Harjinder Singh Bahman, was gunned down near a gurdwara in the city of the Golden Temple.
The victim’s family claimed that the attackers were the same individuals who previously issued him threats and opened fire near his residence.
Harjinder was going to Chheharta in Amritsar to attend a function when masked men on a bike opened fire.
“Harjinder was on his way when at least three men on a bike approached him and opened fire. The victim died of his injuries in the hospital,” said Additional DCP Harpal Singh Randhawa.
Akali Dal general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia questioned the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab and slammed the Aam Aadmi Party government for not taking action despite an earlier police complaint after shots were reportedly fired at the house of the deceased councillor.
Sharing CCTV footage which showed two masked men approaching a building on a narrow lane around 1 am and opening fire, Majithia claimed it was at Harjinder’s house a few days ago.
“A few days ago, shots were fired at the house of Councillor Harjinder Singh. The councillor was constantly receiving threats a complaint of which was filed with the police by the councillor. But no action was taken and today the murder took place. Bhagwant Mann ji, wake up from your sleep and restore the law and order situation. Why was no action taken even after receiving the complaint from DGP Sahib? You are all responsible for the death of the councillor today,” Majithia wrote along with sharing a video clip and a picture of Harjinder.
