Bhubaneswar: Banks in many states, including Odisha, will remain closed on April 18, on the occasion of Good Friday.
The day is listed as a holiday for most states in the Reserve Bank of India’s annual holiday calendar. Banks will be closed in most states except Tripura, Assam, Rajasthan, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, and Srinagar. Physical branches will not operate, but digital banking services such as online transfers, bill payments, and ATMs will remain accessible.
The Indian stock markets will also remain shut on Friday.
Good Friday falls on the sixth day of Holy Week which leads to Easter, which will be celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon which is on April 9 this year. Easter Sunday commemorates Jesus Christ’s resurrection from death as it was on this day that Mary Magdalene discovered an empty tomb in the cave where Jesus Christ was placed after his crucifixion on Good Friday.
In total, there are 13 designated bank holidays in April, including the Saturday offs. Banks were earlier closed on April 1, 5, 7, 10, 14, 15, and 16.
