Bhubaneswar: A day after being sent to Army custody following a midnight trial amid dowry torture and attempt to murder allegations, Major Soumya Ranjan Pati’s lawyer told the media that he had filed a case, accusing his wife of having an extra-marital affair, the same day (Thursday).
“Pati had come across some evidence of wife’s extra-marital affair and subsequently she had apologised for the mistake. His wife had called him to a restaurant for a settlement and that is when he was arrested. When the incident has occurred in Delhi, even medical reports are from Delhi, how can the court here allow police to register Section 307 against the Major?” Major’s lawyer’s Subhasish Mishra questioned.
Mahila police had arrested Pati, a resident of Nayapalli, on Thursday and then approached the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court here to decide whether the accused should be sent to Jharpada jail here or the Army custody.
In her police complaint, the Major’s wife alleged that he had been torturing her mentally and physically for dowry. Moreover, he had allegedly threatened to shoot her if she didn’t bring the money from her parents.
According to media reports, the duo had tied the nuptial knot in 2013. While the Major was posted in Faridabad, his wife worked in Delhi. Pati decided to part ways with her legally after getting whiff of her extra-marital affair. However, a few months ago his wife came back to his house to live with his family. A dispute had erupted then following which Pati had lodged a complaint.
