New Delhi: During his hectic campaigning in West Bengal in pursuit of conquering the eastern state for the first time, Narendra Modi bought and tasted jhalmuri from a roadside eatery, and also took a ride on the Ganga last month.

And on Monday evening, after West Bengal handed the saffron party a historic and landmark mandate, the Prime Minister chose to dress up like a ‘Bangali babu’ as he reached the BJP headquarters in Delhi to address party leaders and workers.

Clad in a silk dhoti and white punjabi, Modi tucked the end of the dhoti in his pocket – just like Bengalis do it traditionally.

He also adorned a scarf around his neck, with ‘booti’ (dotted) design – another mark of Bengali tradition.

He was welcomed by BJP president Nitin Nabin, for whom it was the first electoral success since taking over as party chief in January.

“Today is a historic day… quite unprecedented. When years of efforts turn into success, the happiness that is seen on the faces of people is the same happiness that I see on the faces of BJP workers across the country today,” Modi said.

Besides Bengal, BJP won a third consecutive term in Assam with a two-third majority, achieved a notable breakthrough in Keralam by winning three seats, and also retained power in Puducherry.

In Tamil Nadu, Vijay’s new party TVK emerged as the single largest party with 100-plus seats, upsetting the applecarts of traditional powerhouses DMK and AIADMK.

“Today, I respectfully bow to the people of Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, and the people of Tamil Nadu and Keralam… I also heartily congratulate the millions of BJP workers. Every BJP worker, big or small, has once again performed wonders. They have made the lotus bloom,” Modi said.

“The people of these five states have shown the world why our India is the Mother of Democracy… Today, not only did India’s Democracy win, but so did the Constitution. Today, our constitutional organisations and our democratic processes have won. Almost 93% voting in West Bengal was historic in itself,” Modi said.

Thanking the people of Bengal for helping fulfil the dream of Syama Prasad Mukherjee, PM Modi promised to serve them with good governance and developmental work.

“A new fear-free chapter in Bengal begins today.. I promise to help Bengal regain its lost glory,” Modi said.

He thanked the Election Commission of India (ECI) for guiding the state to a violence-free poll.

“I heartily congratulate the Election Commission, all the brothers and sisters involved in the voting process, and especially the security forces. History will forever remember your contribution to maintaining the dignity of Indian democracy.”

Modi also called for an end to election-related violence. “Let us stop the violence that has dogged the state before and after elections in the past. I appeal to all to come and work for Bengal,” Modi said.
