Mumbai: As the impending One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa national cricket team draws near, the BCCI has quietly issued a firm directive to veteran opener Rohit Sharma — urging him to hone in on his fitness and performance, rather than get drawn into swirling talk about his long-term future in India’s ODI setup.
Although South Africa’s tour has not yet started, the board appears to be preparing for what could be a defining moment for both Rohit and Virat Kohli — a closed-door review of their 50-over roles once the three-match series ends.
Reality behind the caution
According to reports, the plan is to convene a meeting in Ahmedabad after the final ODI — bringing together BCCI officials, the head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to chart a clear roadmap for the two stalwarts with the 2027 ODI World Cup in view.
According to media reports quoting sources, while both players remain respected pillars of the squad, the board expects “clarity on what is expected” — and has asked Rohit in particular to “just focus on his fitness and performance,” and steer clear of responding to speculation about his future.
Concerns over rhythm and form
Part of BCCI’s concern stems from the fact that veteran players like Rohit and Kohli now often re-enter the ODI side after long gaps. Insiders point to their recent series in Australia: although they managed a decent score in the third match, both looked noticeably rusty in the first two — a risk the board feels cannot become routine.
Moreover, the team expects Rohit to revert to his trademark aggressive style at the top of the order: take charge early, dictate tempo, and lead by example. Reports suggest that in Australia, however, he appeared cautious — slower to settle in and reluctant to take risks.
That said, BCCI insiders reaffirm that both Rohit and Kohli remain “central pillars” of India’s ODI batting line-up — not just for their personal contributions, but for how their experience and temperament can provide stability for younger batters in the squad.
