Bhubaneswar: PET-CT service for cancer patients was inaugurated at AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s department of Nuclear Medicine on Wednesday.
This will help cancer patients get world-class treatment at an affordable price at AIIMS.
The high-end PET-CT equipment which has been installed has 128-slice CT and LSO crystals, the first of its kind in Odisha, informed Dr Kanhaiya Agrawal, Associate Professor, Nuclear Medicine.
Patients of Odisha and neighbouring states will be charged Rs 7500 for PET-CT scan.
The high-end equipment will ensure lesser dose of radiation to the patient, with better imaging leading to more accurate diagnosis.
After inaugurating the important facility, Director Dr Gitanjali Batmanabane said it’s a much-awaited addition to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar has thus become the only government hospital in eastern India and state of Odisha to have its own PET-CT equipment.
PET-CT is used mainly to detect cancer, determine whether a cancer has spread in other parts of the body, assess the effectiveness of treatment, determine if cancer has returned after treatment and evaluate prognosis. It is also used to determine the effects of heart attack on areas of the heart, identify areas of the heart muscle that would benefit from angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery, evaluate brain abnormalities like tumours, memory disorders, seizures and other central nervous system disorders, map normal human brain and heart function.
