Phulbani: One person was killed and 40 others injured, one of them seriously, when a private bus carrying more than 40 migrant workers from Surat overturned at Kalinga Ghat near the border of Ganjam and Kandhamal districts on Saturday evening.

DIG, Southern Range, Satyabrata Bhoi said the ill-fated bus (GJ-18-X-2693) was on the way to Ganjam district with about 58 migrant workers when the driver lost control of the vehicle at Kalinga Ghat area near Andharakota in the evening.

“We have information that one migrant worker has died and another seriously injured while about 40 who have sustained minor injuries have been shifted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at G Udayagiri in Kandhamal district,” the DIG said.

He said the police, Fire Brigade and ambulance vans are present at the spot for the rescue operation.

The injured workers will be shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital if their condition is found to be critical,” Bhoi added.

Contacted, Chief Fire Officer Sukanta Sethi said that the deceased has been identified as Chitta Ranjan Sethi of Buguda area of Ganjam district.

He said that a total of 64 migrant workers including four women and two children were on the way to the district when the incident took place. “We have engaged three Fire Brigades from G Udayagiri, Tikabali and Phiringia in the rescue of the injured passengers,” he informed.

Ganjam SP Pratik Singh said that the seriously injured migrant worker has been shifted to the sub-divisional hospital in Bhanjanagar while arrangements have been made for the migrant workers to their respective destinations with social distancing norms after the first-aid at the G Udayagiri CHC.
