Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has tested positive for COVID-19, the Prime Minister’s office revealed on Thursday.
The first lady was not feeling well and had minor flu-like symptoms with low fever after returning from a speaking engagement in the UK.
She will be kept in isolation. The Prime Minister is in “good health” but will be in isolation as well for 14 days as “a precautionary measure”, the PM’s office said in a statement. He would resume his duties on Friday, holding briefings, phone calls and virtual meetings from home.
“Also on the advice of doctors, he will not be tested at this stage since he has no symptoms. For the same reason, doctors say there is no risk to those who have been in contact with him recently,” the statement said.
“Being in quarantine at home is nothing compared with other Canadian families who might be going through this and for those facing more serious health concerns,” the first lady said thanking all those who have reached out to her.
Canada has so reported 158 positive cases of the coronavirus with one death.
