Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee questioned on Monday why Nupur Sharma hasn’t been arrested yet.
Speaking at the India Today Conclave East, Mamata called for the immediate arrest of the now-suspended BJP spokesperson, whose controversial comments on Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate led to condemnation from several countries and sparked violent protests across India.
The Bengal CM said that there is a demand for Nupur’s arrest because “you cannot play with fire.”
Mamata took a dig at BJP, saying that the entire controversy was a conspiracy by the saffron party to divide the people.
“It is a conspiracy — a policy of hatred, a divisive policy by the BJP,” said Mamata.
Kolkata Police recently issued a lookout notice against Nupur for failing to respond to two summons after FIRs were registered in her name at two police stations.
The Supreme Court last week came down heavily on Nupur and asked her to apologize to the nation.
