New Delhi: The Centre has granted Enforcement Directorate Director Rahul Navin another one-year extension, allowing him to continue in the post until August 13, 2027, according to a government notification.

Navin, a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service officer from the Income Tax cadre, has been serving as the full-time head of the country’s premier anti-money laundering agency since August 14, 2024. He is 59.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), in an order issued on Saturday, approved the continuation of Navin as ED director for one year beyond August 13, 2026. The extension will remain valid “i.e. up to August 13, 2027, including extension in service beyond the date of his superannuation, July 31, 2027, or until further orders whichever is earlier.”

Under the existing rules, the director of the Enforcement Directorate is initially appointed for two years. The tenure can subsequently be extended by three successive one-year periods.

Navin was appointed acting director of the agency in September 2023 before taking over as its full-time chief the following year, as reported by Moneycontrol.

During his tenure, the ED has pursued a number of high-profile financial crime investigations and opened fresh probes, including those concerning political consultancy firm I-PAC and several online money gaming companies.

The agency has also dealt with multiple cases involving alleged fraud by real estate firms against homebuyers. Invoking provisions of the anti-money laundering law, it has facilitated the restoration of assets worth crores of rupees to people who claimed to have been cheated.

Another area of focus during Navin’s tenure has been the effort to settle prolonged litigation involving cases registered under the now-repealed Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA). The agency has initiated steps to have such cases adjudicated and has begun compounding proceedings under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Navin has a B.Tech and an M.Tech from IIT-Kanpur, besides an MBA from Melbourne’s Swinburne University of Technology. He has written several books, journal papers and articles dealing with international taxation and transfer pricing in the field of direct taxation.

The Enforcement Directorate probes financial offences under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA). It also enforces the civil provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
