Bhubaneswar: With the sudden upsurge in COVID-19 cases in the neighbouring states and detection of a new mutant strain of the virus, the civic bodies of the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack have initiated measures to ensure that the denizens are adhering to COVID-appropriate behaviour.

In a fresh advisory issued on Monday, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) directed the police to ensure strict implementation of the COVID-19 safety norms.

Briefing the media, BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary said five special enforcement squads have been formed to keep a close watch on the people. A meeting with the Commissionerate Police in this connection was held on Monday and a joint enforcement drive has already started in the city.

He further said an awareness drive has also been launched in the city with the enforcement officials requesting the denizens at market places to follow the COVID-19 safety norms through the public address system. This apart, the social media platform is also being used to raise awareness.

Stating that some people have been penalised for violating the guidelines, he said the surveillance will be intensified further in the coming days.
