New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The coal crisis in the thermal power stations across the country, including Odisha, has improved with steady supply for the last few days. The power plants, which had plunged into a deep crisis with less than two days’ coal stock on October 10, now has a stock of five days.

As per Central Electricity Authority (CEA) report, the coal stock with power plants stood at 9.028 million tonne (MT) as on October 26. With daily increase in coal stock for the last nine days, 5 days’ stock is available with the Thermal Power Plants (TPPs).

The Ministry of Coal has claimed that the plants are likely to have 6 days’ buffer stock in around a week’s time. The coal consumed on daily basis by the TPPs is replenished by coal companies and supply has been consistently more than 2.1 MT daily for the last one week, it added.

As the coal crisis turned critical across the country, leading many states to enforce load-shedding earlier this month, Union Minister for Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi had held a virtual meeting with Minister of Power RK Singh and Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw along with senior officers of the respective ministries, CMDs and officials of the coal companies.

It was agreed in the meeting that supply to power plants will be increased to around two million ton per day from all sources including Coal India Ltd, Singareni Collieries Ltd and captive mines.
