Complicated Onco Surgery Conducted At SUM Hospital

Bhubaneswar: A team of surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here, successfully conducted a complicated operation on a patient suffering from Chondrosarcoma recently.

Chondrosarcoma is a kind of cancer composed of cells derived from transformed cells which produce cartilage.

The 52-year-old patient, Prabhakar Bhoi is a resident of  Khirapalli village in Bargarh.

Bhoi had come to the hospital with a mass of around 10×11 cm on the right side of his thoracic cage. On evaluation, he was diagnosed to be a case of Chondrosarcoma, which arose from the thoracic rib involving the right lower lung and diaphragm going into the liver, said Dr Sunil Agrawala, surgical oncologist. Dr Agrawala led the surgical team.

Bhoi had come to the IMS and SUM Hospital, Faculty of Medical Sciences of SOA Deemed to be University, after failing to get the required treatment in several places including the neighbouring states.

The team also included surgical oncologists Dr Pradyumna Sahoo and Dr Amitav Jena, medical oncologist Dr Sourav Mishra and anaesthetist Dr Nupur Moda.

Dr Agrawala and his team had recently successfully conducted surgery on a patient suffering from cancer of the lungs.

“Complicated thoracic and lung surgeries are being done at the IMS and SUM Hospital, which has emerged as a specialised centre for such surgeries at an affordable cost,” he said.
