New Delhi: A record number of 95,880 COVID-19 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, surpassing the 93,337 fresh infections reported in the country overnight, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.

With this India overtook the US to register the highest number of COVID-19 recoveries in the world, the ministry informed.

Meanwhile, India’s affected tally went past the 53-lakh mark to stand at 53,08,014 on Saturday.

Also, 1,247 more patients succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours.

So far, 85,619 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 with the country reporting more than 1,000 daily deaths in a row for over a fortnight. India’s case fatality rate due to COVID-19 has, however, dropped to 1.61 per cent.

About 79.29 per cent (42,08,431) people have recovered from the infection so far with 95,880 being discharged on Friday. Another 19.1 per cent (10,13,964) are still under treatment.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 6,24,54,254 samples have been tested for COVID-19, which includes Friday’s 8,81,911.
