Bhubaneswar: With the highest daily COVID count of 5,280 since the start of the pandemic, China has ordered 51 million people to go into lockdown.

While Jilin province is the worst-hit area, at least 10 cities and counties have been lockdown because of the latest surge and it includes the tech hub of Shenzhen, home to 17 million, the AFP News Agency said.

According to ABC News, all 24 million people in northeastern Jilin province, which is the epicentre of the omicron variant outbreak with 895 cases, went into lockdown along with the locked-down city of Changchun.

Outbreaks and containment measures are also in place at Shanghai, the financial powerhouse, and Shenzhen, the southern tech hub, where 17.5 million residents are under seven-day lockdown with three rounds of testing.
