New Delhi: Cow vigilante Raj Kumar alias Bittu Bajrangi has been put under house arrest in Faridabad.
Two years ago, Bajrangi was accused of instigating communal violence during the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek in Haryana’s Nuh. Violence spread to Gurugram, resulting in 6 deaths and leaving over 70 people injured.
Bajrangi, the head of Goarakshak Bajrang Force, was booked for rioting, assault, brandishing weapons, and dacoity.
Mohit Yadav alias Monu Manesar, another cow vigilante, was accused of sharing provocative videos that inflamed communal tensions.
A total of 292 people were arrested for the 2023 violence.
To prevent Bajrangi from participating in this year’s religious procession on Monday, the local administration has sought to rein him in.
Police said two armed personnel have been deployed outside Bajrangi’s Faridabad home from Sunday evening, and will remain there until the procession is completed.
Before Bajrangi was put under house arrest, Nuh Police denied him permission to attend the annual yatra.
He submitted an undertaking vowing not to make any unwarranted statement.
Bajrangi then moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court for permission to attend the procession, seeking an urgent hearing on his petition. It didn’t work out for him.
Haryana is under BJP rule after the saffron party won the Assembly elections last October for a third straight term.
