Bhubaneswar: The state government on Sunday ruled out flood-like situation due to heavy rainfall in coastal areas for two days on the impact of cyclone ‘Asani’.
Speaking to media, Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Jena said Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall due to the cyclone on May 10. Similarly, heavy rain is likely in Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts on May 11 and Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore districts on May 12.
He assured that the downpour would not lead to flood-like situation in those districts as all possible preventive steps have been taken to prevent water-logging in low-lying areas.
Though the cyclone will not make landfall in Odisha, it will move close to the coast on the three days. It will take a diversion on approaching the coastal areas of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha.
The cyclonic storm will move at a distance of 90 to 100 km from Puri. But, it will have partial impact on the coastal areas where wind will blow at 50 km per hour, he added.
On preparation of the state government, Jena said all fishing boats have returned from deep sea to the coast. In order to prevent fishermen to venture into sea for next 4 days, Danger Signal 1 has been hoisted at Puri and Paradip, Gopalpur, and Dhamra ports.
Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams have been kept ready in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada districts to help in evacuation of people, if necessary, Jena said.
