Cyclone Fani Landfall Causes Damage In Puri; Wind Speed Touches 175 kmph

Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of trees were uprooted and electricity and telephone poles twisted as Cyclone Fani’s pounded Puri district as part of its landfall on Friday morning, government sources said.

Special relief commissioner Bishnupada Sethy told Odisha Bytes that the landfall started at around 8 am and would continue for at least two hours.

“We are monitoring the situation and taking all measures possible to control the damage,” Sethy said.

The exact location and time was yet to be ascertained but sources said it could between 8 am to 8.30 am.

Very heavy rain accompanied by very strong winds, measuring between 150 kmph to 175 kmph, was experienced as the tropical cyclone started making contact with land. The cyclone’s diameter is estimated to be 28 km, government sources said. Half of Fani’s eye lays in sea right now, sources added.
