Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over eastcentral Arabian Sea off Karnataka coast around May 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.
Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 22. Thereafter, it is likely to move northwards and intensify further, it added.
The national forecaster further stated that conditions are likely to become favourable for Monsoon onset over Kerala during the next 4-5 days. The southwest monsoon, usually, sets in over Kerala around June 1 and spreads across India by July 8.

The IMD has also predicted isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph in Odisha from May 20-24. This is being attributed to the east-west trough running from cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan to north Bangladesh across north Rajasthan, south Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
The weather agency has also warned of hot and humid conditions at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati on May 20-21.
On May 20, there is also a yellow warning for thunderstorm/lightning with surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati and Sundargarh.
While there will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 6-7 days, the mercury may soar past 40°C in isolated pockets of Sambalpur and Balangir districts.
Notably, the state capital Bhubaneswar recorded 37.4°C by 11.30 this morning.
