Cyclonic Storm Asani Weakens To Depression, Soon To Become Well-Marked Low Pressure

Bhubaneswar: The remnant of the cyclonic storm weakened into a depression on Thursday. The system is likely to weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area in the next 12 hours.

“Deep Depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh remained practically stationary during last 6 hours and weakened into a depression over the same region. It is likely to hover around the same region and weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure Area during the next 12 hours,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal, and heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

The MeT office has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershower at a few places in Odisha from 8.30 am on Thursday to 8.30 am on Friday.

Notably, the cyclonic storm Asani had moved close to the coast between Machilipatnam and Narsapuram in Andhra Pradesh late on Wednesday night after weakening into a deep depression. “The deep depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly northward with a speed of about 6 kmph during the last 6 hours, crossed Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Narsapur with wind speed of 55-65 gusting to 75 kmph between 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm and lay centred at 20.30 hours over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal, about 30 km north-northeast of Machilipatnam, 40km west of Narsapur,” the IMD said on Wednesday.

According to private weather forecaster Skymet, the storm made landfall between Machilipatnam and Narsapuram in Andhra Pradesh as a deep depression. It had, however, forecast that Asani may not have a complete landfall, as it is likely to recurve along the coastline of Andhra Pradesh, moving across Machilipatnam, Narsapur, Kakinada, Tuni, and Vizag. Finally, the storm is likely to wheel off to the Bay of Bengal as a depression or low-pressure area.
