New Delhi: The recent spate of teen suicides across the country has alarmed parents and set the authorities thinking.
Three days after a class X student of Delhi’s St Columba’s School jumped to his death from an elevated Metro station, the Delhi government announced steps to address the extremely worrying issue.
Education minister Ashish Sood has ordered a comprehensive review of the mental-health practices being followed in all schools in the national Capital. The government is also writing to schools to check whether CBSE’s prescribed mental-health standards are being properly implemented.
The minister said that any school requiring help in strengthening its mental-health framework will be extended full government support.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that the next generation remains mentally healthy and does not fall into distress,” Sood stated.
Rules are already in place for schools and its students and parents. Now, a committee has been constituted to monitor whether the institutions are actually following the prescribed mental health guidelines.
The panel has been asked to submit evaluation reports within three days.
