New Delhi: If current trends are anything to go by, satire politics may be set to take root in India.

The country’s Gen-Z seem to have found their mojo in internet-born groups based on satire, memes and a tone which attract students and youths, and have the potential to develop into strong movements based on current issues and problems which affect them.

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) showed the way. Then came E20 Janta Party and Reservation Hatao Andolan.

And now, we have the Dimagi Naxal Party.

An Instagram account by the name of ‘Dimagi Naxal Party’ has crossed 2 lakh followers after making a return following its suspension.

The account has become active again after becoming inaccessible, displaying ‘User not found’ and ‘No posts’.

The ‘Dimagi Naxal Party’ also has an X account under the name ‘Dimagi Naxal Janta Party’.

The account claimed that its Instagram account was suspended. “Dimag Se Paidal Group has suspended our Instagram account… But we are Dimagi people… We shall be back soon. Keep an eye on the only official page.”

The name is possibly inspired a phrase Prime Minister Narendra Modi used in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort.

“We have succeeded in eliminating armed Naxals from the forests and liberating the nation from that crisis. However, while armed Naxals are gone, dimagi (intellectual) Naxals are lurking around,” Modi said, urging people to “identify” and “isolate” such elements so India’s youth are not dragged onto the “wrong path.”

The tagline of the newest online satirical group says – ‘Ideas. Freedom. Nation First.’

It goes on to say – ‘Think | Research | Resist. Founder: A Dimagi Naxal’.

The group has displayed a 10-point manifesto, encouraging followers to ‘Question, Think, Don’t Blindly Follow’.

“We are not against the nation. We are against ignorance, injustice and blind obedience. Our weapon is the mind, our revolution is of ideas”, the group professes.

Just the kind of thoughts that is most likely to strike a chord with Gen-Z.

Some of the reactions suggest precisely that.

“They understand our mindset better,” is the common refrain.

“These movements or social media party trends are gaining traction because their leaders and faces appear more approachable and relatable to young people. There is a sense that they understand our mindset better and are less likely to police or lecture us,” opined one user.

“There is a growing need for greater sensitivity towards the concerns of young people and for those concerns to be addressed in a way that resonates with us, something legacy political parties often fail to recognise,” said another.

All these movements are taking shape online, with none of them being officially recognised political parties.

But the power of such movements was seen recently in the CJP-led agitation at Jantar Mantar, which led to the resignation of Union Education minister Dhamendra Pradhan.

So traditional political parties better take note and seriously hear these voices.
