New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition, seeking judicial probe into the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 26 people were killed.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh castigated the counsels for filing an “irresponsible petition” and cautioning against demoralising the armed forces. “This is the crucial hour when each and every Indian has joined hands to fight terrorism… you are trying to demoralise the forces in this hour of crisis and juncture? Look at the sensitivity of the issue,” the bench said.
It also reminded the petitioner that the judges’ task is to decide disputes and not conduct probes. “Be responsible. You owe some duty towards the country. You are asking a retired Supreme Court judge to investigate. Since when has a retired High Court or Supreme Court judge become an expert to investigate such issues (terrorism)? We only decide disputes. Don’t ask us to pass an order,” commented Justice Surya Kant.
After arguing for some time, the counsel then sought permission to withdraw the plea.
